I installed flashplugin-nonfree to be able to play sound from two
sources.
I agree (that this is a duplicate of 192888). That read post in there
for a while (there are a lot!), and they describe my problem.

I waited several minutes. It was there the almost the whole time that I
wrote this bug report. It only disappeared after I triggered another
event.
After I logged in, I tried to mute my system as soon as I heard the
Ubuntu login sound. So, yes, by mean the GNOME loading.

that both Ctrl-Up and Shift-Up work correctly (if that matters).
I have never consciously used Ctrl-Up before (normally Ctrl-Left and
-Right jump the cursor over text), but it appears to be a workaround, at

Karmic also boots much slower for me. I do not have an exact measure of
Jaunty's time, but I Karmic takes about twice as long to boot.
