WTF? This is about 10.04, a.k.a. lucid. The only reason I mentioned 9.04
was to point out that in 9.04 it worked.

version I upgraded from (indeed, I thought this might be relevant, as I
had installed a couple of other machines from scratch, where this
problem did not occur). But the problem occurs *after* the upgrade, i.e.
