I had exactly the same problem involving exactly the same hardware
(Texas Instruments PCI7420 CardBus Controller) as initially reported.
I can confirm this issue has been fixed in the latest release with
kernel 2.6.27-7.
SD cards can now be read from and written to flawlessly.

Thank you for your prompt reponse.
I have followed the trouble booting instructions as suggested and only
the parameters acpi=off and acpi=ht would allow the kernel to boot.
Using any other parameter would throw a kernel panic.

I get exactly the same error on a clean install of Hardy. Selecting the clock
applet right after startup causes gnome-panel to become unresponsive. It also
seems to crash the network manager applet.

For me it is just the opposite. It is a Dell Latitude D520 with Intel
sound running Feisty. If I reboot and run Skype, dead mic. Then I run
Ekiga, proceed with 6x "next buttons" set audio as default in both
boxes, press test button and voilà! It works. I cancel the Ekiga wizard,
