I can confirm this problem.
I could solve it with the help of

related to AppArmor. To solve it I typed:
sudo aa-complain mysqld-akonadi
sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor reload
After this I could start akonadi using System Settings
i haven't had any more crashes or hangs - i suspect the fixes rolled in
since 1:2.5.5-1ubuntu3 must have also fixed this problem.

I think you have only to change the (audio) device in gnome-volume-control.
At default it is the audio device of the server.
If you don't know the name of your audio device, you could find the it with
"lspci | grep audio"
So change your device in gnome-volume-control (=volume mixer).

I will have the same problem either with all media players on my system or
with none. I do not think the PPA package had an effect as DVDs do
sometimes work on my system.

extboot.

After some observations, I think it comes from a resize problem: the
notification seems to allocate a static size for thumbnails, and those
are automatically stretched to fill a kind of square → no consideration
