I just installed kernel 3.2.0-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP as part of the
normal update process.
Good news.
I now have sound on headphone front socket (and on rear speaker connection too).
The hardware test speaker feature on the Gnome sound settings facility
still doesn't work however.

3.2.0-24-generic #37 upgrade to #38 and now it has all stopped

I found that similar worked for me -
At terminal, I ran 'alsamixer'. The Via VT1705 showed by default. At
the interface I cursored over to make 'front' highlight in red then

I was able to get sound working by entering "alsamixer" in a terminal, arrow

Went to look on the bios to see if there is a setting for the front
panel, and I can change it from the AC97 value that was there to HD
audio. Tried to do it but didn't work either.

tried with a new headphones and it didn't work either, but then I tried
the connector on the back of the computer and that one is working. So my
problem is with the front conectors, that were working on 11.10.

apport-collect attaches audio-specific information (like it did in this
bug).

alsa-driver aparently is not a package, so apport-collect didn't work.
Also the DKMS driver didin't work. I think it installed ok because now
there are more controls on alsamixer but leaving them on default or
raising them to 100 and unmutting them didn't work.
