Have just linked two duplilicate threads to this one. Seems to be
affecting several people.

Apparently there is an upstream fix available but it needs packaging:

commit 852c3a36c216e351d07ca96e9af30b81fff30ccc

ALSA: hda - Fix initialization of secondary capture source on VT1705
....

(Not as detailed in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/UpgradingAlsa/DKMS )
The suggested dkms / ppa-daily is source, not .deb, and not always
building properly, so the status says. Also unclear if this is suitable
for 64bit (?)
