[SOLUTION / WORK-AROUND]

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/385076
Message #6

I found that similar worked for me -

At terminal, I ran 'alsamixer'. The Via VT1705 showed by default. At
the interface I cursored over to make 'front' highlight in red then
pressed 'm' as indicated in the other bug report.

The sound control GUI in 'system-settings' , when run simultaneously for
testing, interacted with alsamixer immediately. Cards confusingly
showed as toggling on and off. Ended up doing this all a few times.
NOT tweaking 'Master' in the terminal UI seemed to be the final trick.

Hours of messing about to get finally here .... But it works for
now.
