For reference: This problem appears to have been caused by a kernel
console bug that was fixed in 2.6.22 (see the Linux kernel mailing list
thread at http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/4/27/370), so this problem should be
gone in Gutsy.

I still haven't found the script that makes this happen, but a quick
workaround is to switch terminals. Press ctrl+alt+f4 (for example) and
then switch back to the graphical terminal with ctrl+alt+f7.
Let's hope feisty fixes this.

This just happened to me again, and as I was halfway through typing
something I kept going. About two minutes later, the screen shifted even
more.

Just for your information, I'm think I'm on my way to find the cause of
the problem. I think it is one of the daily cron scripts. What I've done
now is that I mode all files from /etc/cron.daily another directory.
Since then, the problem has not occured. Now i'm moving one script per

OK, it doesn't have to do with updatedb either. Today I resumed from a
more-than-week-long hibernation; the screen shifted while updatedb was
running (as usual); I re-hibernated and resumed; the screen soon shifted
again. I also checked for dmesg entries, but there were none at the time

I don't know how to tell when updatedb is run, but I can report that
this problem happens several times a day. Yesterday I tried logging out
to fix the problem, and each time (twice) it reoccurred a few minutes
after logging back in.

Joachim: if you have an nVidia card, you can search for "nvidia-glx" in
Synaptic, and look at the installed version number there. However, I
doubt that this problem has to do with the driver version, after all. Do
you also have a Dell laptop?
I've also noticed that the problem doesn't seem to be r
How do I find out which drivers I am using?
Everything you've described matches what happens on my system, by the

Some more results of my troubleshooting:
The problem doesn't have to do with the restricted nVidia drivers. I
recently changed from the non-free ("nvidia") driver to the free ("nv")
driver, and the problem still appeared after a while.
What about you, Joachim, are you using the nVidia drivers as
This happens to me as well. It started after I ran several recommended
updates this Monday; most notably xorg and xserver-xorg from version
1:7.1.1ubuntu6 to 1:7.1.1ubuntu6.2. It happened during the upgrade in
question, and since then, it has happened once shortly after each time I
