I'd keep it open, this is more of a general go-to bug for the described
problem. If this one stays open, people affected in other applications can be
redirected here. bug #704833 is specific to dropbox and can be closed as soon
as dropbox devs implement the correction.
+1 to Sebastian's idea.
I do like Sebastian idea, as developed in 704833 bug report. While this
report concerns primarily the Dropbox icon issue, it seems that a
solution covering all apps still using the "old" notification area, i.e.
(to my understanding) implementing the systray as an indicator-applet
which just packs

Marco, thanks for sharing this extremely useful information. I find it
completely pointless that this configuration option is not advertised
during alpha testing. Also: the dropbox people should be contacted (even
if I am ready to bet that no ubuntu bigs will do that).

Well, it seems that in order to have all applications white-listed,
without causing problems the functioning of regular indicator-applets,
the command should be:
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Panel systray-whitelist "[
'JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'all' ]"

It seems that notification area (systray) is still supported, but for
limited supported "white-liste" apps. See this report:
