I do like Sebastian idea, as developed in 704833 bug report. While this report concerns primarily the Dropbox icon issue, it seems that a solution covering all apps still using the "old" notification area, i.e. (to my understanding) implementing the systray as an indicator-applet which just packs these apps in a menu.
