better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since
that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fix
I finally did a fresh install of 10.10 and dist-upgraded to 11.04 - that
worked just fine.
As an aside, the nouveau driver (and the experimental 3D support) work
great! I was so thrilled to see just about everything work - compiz
effects, smooth switching between text tty and X, suspend/resume...
Thanks, I wasn't sure its the installer because the install itself goes
through without trouble, kernel boot messages appear, fsck and fs mount
seem to happen.
Anyway, I didn't mention it but I did try the recovery mode - that's
where i get to see the boot time messages.

I think you're saying this is the first installed boot, and so I've
moved this bug to the installer package.
It might be worth trying to boot into the recovery mode boot - hit shift
right after the bios comes up to bring up the grub menu and select the
'recovery mode' entry and see if it gives any
