just a short note to say that this is solved with 11.04 from a USB stick
on the same hardware. Did not try with the CD, but I assume it is the
same. Now I won't have to disassemble the video card every time I re-
install. Thank you!

Sorry for taking so long. I tried to produce as useful a feedback as
possible and got bogged down in details (such as transconding AVCHD
movies).
At the following links you will find two movies capturing the boot
process. I was not able to capture any other debugging information /
logs, sorry.

Try with the 10.04.1 version. If also You have the same problem see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingCasper. Althought if You have to install it
(for any reason) perhaps the alternate version could be installed because
hasn´t graphic installer.

@Ajenbo: sorry I did not notice the question. I was installing directly
from the liveCD on a blank HDD. I ended up removing the ATI video card,
installing Kubuntu, then re-installing the video card and re-configuring
Kubuntu to use it.
