@Ajenbo: sorry I did not notice the question. I was installing directly from the liveCD on a blank HDD. I ended up removing the ATI video card, installing Kubuntu, then re-installing the video card and re-configuring Kubuntu to use it.
@Monkey: I see there is a lucid.1 candidate at [0]. I have a spare blank HDD and can probably put in a couple of hours of fiddling with it the coming weekend.
