this bug is still active. no matter which backend i use, with all
appropriate dependencies that are listed, minitube will not play video
on x64 lucid.
it does work if i run it with this command that Jose posted:
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 && minitube

Seems that phonon-backend-gstreamer | phonon-backend does not work,
because phonon itself prefers the xine backend. Anyway, I added a
suggest on libxine1-ffmpeg for the 1.0 package. I marked this bug as fix
released with it and will stay in kontact with upstream, so that we can
have a second look.
@Flavio - I removed 'phonon-backend-xine', but nothing changed. So i
tried to install 'libxine1-ffmpeg' and then install back the 'phonon-
backend-xine' and now it works. :) Thanks for the help and I hope you'll
solve this issue that no additional packages will be necessary.

If upstream prefers, we could switch to phonon-backend-gstreamer |
phonon-backend, that would install phonon-backend-gstreamer, if there is
no backend and if phonon-backend-xine is already there nothing would be
installed.
Anyway the problem stays, users would have to install the required
codecs t

Qt in itself has nothing to do with Xine. KDE (or the Kubuntu team) has chosen
Xine has its default Phonon backend, but Qt apps are not KDE apps. And Phonon
is a crossplatform Qt module, not a KDE specific thing. I think this a common
misconception rooted in the past. Qt apps today in

Thanks for your patience and sorry for bringing confusion by posting to

I finally managed to have a closer look at this problem.
First of all minitube depends on phonon and phonon depends on phonon-
backend-xine | phonon-backend. Means that if no phonon backend is
install

As I see it we have two distinct problems:
1. Which Phonon backend to depend on
Ideally, GStreamer for Ubuntu and Xine for Kubuntu. My personal
experience is that the GStreamer backend works much better with YouTube
videos. So

Tried the 0.9 from repos and also the 1.0 version.
I also installed these packages phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine,
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad.
I also tried running it with this command export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 &&
minitube.
The minitube still does not play
ah, works now after doing sudo apt-get install phonon-backend-gstreamer

I get no video, though I do get sound...
If I run minitube on a terminal I get this error while playing videos
X Error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) 8

Same bug here. Minitube starts, but it doesn't play videos. It shows only the
description of the video.
Ubuntu 10.04. I tried installing from synaptics and as deb too. I have
installed it from source too, same problem.

I ended up removing the package in the Ubuntu repositories and
installing the version from the PPA listed in Ubuntu-Tweak manually from
the PPA page, the deb wanted libqt4-phonon as a dependency, so I
installed that from synaptic and then ran the deb again. Now everything
seems to work. Looks to
