Yes. booting with "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash" makes work the
live cd. And the installed system too, even if with some crashes, for
example when you try to play a video, or when it just happens at random
times. In my Travelmate 243LC (VGA compatible controller: Intel
Corporation 82852/855G
*The following fix works for the Acer Travelmate 2350 and Ubuntu 10.04
32 bit desktop standard installation CD*
In short:
1) At the screen with a keyboard and stickfigure, press Enter to get to the
menu.
2) Hit Enter to select your language, and then press F6 and then Esc.
3) Add "i915.modeset=1"

You don't have to connect an external monitor and change the kernel
line. Just doing one of them will do. I suggest that you try the first
option and see if the system will boot with a live cd. If it doesn't
then we probably don't have the same problem.

thank you for your suggestion, I hope I could fix the problem with it.
But there are still some obstacles for me:
1 - I want to run Live CD in order to install it: ok for external monitor,
but I don't know how to modify the kernel (is it possible running a live
cd?). Should I better use the
boot the live cd of 10.04 final release with the option "nomodeset" doesn't
change anything for my Travelmate 243LC. limbo anyway...

I had the same problem with Acer Travelmate 800. I have two workarounds
that worked for me.
1. Connect an external monitor to the laptop.
2. Put radeon.modeset=0 or nomodeset in the kernel line.

Acer Extensa 2951 LMI works fine with Ubuntu 9.10. After update to 10.04
the error message "acer-wmi: unsupported wmi-interface". After that
blank screen and just the fan works fine

I having this exact problem with my Acer TravelMate 290 laptop. I am
able to boot into recovery mode and use the "low graphics" mode, but
LET'S FIX THIS. An entire computer brand can't behaving this level of
disfunctionality.

I can boot 2.6.32-21 in failsafe graphic mode on the Acer.
Kernel 2.6.31-21 boots without problems.

i installed 9.10 and it works just fine on the same machine... here
further information about the machine (the logs are from 9.10 which
boots and works just fine - 10.04 doesnt put anything in Xorg.0.log):

I tried installing with the alternate cd - which works, but even, as
soon as X starts (tried it even over the console) the maschine breaks
completely. (altough its still turned on - the fan keeps on spinning).
The same issue is with the live cd - b
