Yes. booting with "i915.modeset=1" after "quiet splash" makes work the live cd. And the installed system too, even if with some crashes, for example when you try to play a video, or when it just happens at random times. In my Travelmate 243LC (VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM) everything was fixed, for now, by the "GTT Incoherency Patch" described in the link proposed above by mac.ryan : https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes.
