Hey guys,
Just a quick heads up.
I upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 last week and used the same laptop-eapd
workaround for sound. Everything was going fine. Until I opened up the
sound preferences and noticed there was still some room on the volume
slider to increase the volume. So I cranked it up. A few

Hi,
I've experienced the same bug on the same laptop.
My solution was to modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add the
following line:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd enable=1 index=0
Reboot, and with any luck you'll be welcomed with the Ubuntu sounds! I
have tried this on 8.10 -> 1

Hi Mhatz,
Please, if you are still having issues, test with the latest development
release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It wi
Nice research Phil! I wish I had some time to check it out myself but I
am too busy to do so. It's sad though, that even though it has been
reported as a bug, nobody showed any interest. Anyway, maybe I ll find
some time and read the code myself and find out a solution.

Yea same problem here but I never noticed because I never use
headphones.
As for the laptop=eapd:
It's the setting for a Clevo M540JE, M550JE that seems to work OK for
our model.
I guess that ALSA never made support for certain models with the 883
codec.
Examples can be found in this post:

Happy New Year!
Mhatz,
Add the line:
options snd-hda-intel model=laptop-eapd
To the end of /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
And it should work!
Best wishes in 2010

Post reply if it did the trick!

Hi,
This was/still is my problem every time a new release came. I had no
better luck with other distros like openSuse, but that was sometime ago.
I also have a P1 express dual and the following thing should work for
you too.
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

Mint 7 Gloria.
Let me know how it goes.

Ok, fixed the problem with the disappearing of the soundcard. It has to
do with an analog modem that resides in the soundcard. When I installed
the driver, then the card disappeared. Uninstalling it fixes the
problem.
But still no sound from speakers.
Is there something that we can do? I mean how
I did a new fresh installation, with Karmic final release today, and I
ve noticed a few things: When I install it with the kernel 2.6.31-14 the
soundcard is detected but there is no sound from speakers. After the
upgrade to 2.6.31-15 kernel there is no soundcard detected! The odd

Today I started my system and heard the startup sound! And then nothing.

I did so but still I have no sound from the speakers. But through
headphones, I can hear it loud and clear! In previous versions of
Ubuntu, the sound was not so clear. Anything else I may post that can be

Please try installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic, and
