another addendum:
After a cold re-boot (power down/up) going back into the printer
selection area 'System/Admin/Printing' reveals that the HP 3820 I had to
select in 'Make and Model' has remained selected as Hewlett-Packard
Deskjet 3820.great news, once it's selected it appears to remain

Although I had selected the HP deskjet 3820 to be installed(Ubuntu
had identified and appeared to bring up the driver), in the line "Make
