In order to get it to work again I had to
1. Remove the printer from cups using http://localhost:631.
2. Remove the printer from HPLIP.
3. Reinstalling it using 'sudo hp-setup'.

The title was misleading for me, since I never heard of BEH since it
crashed. The symptoms are similar (printer does not work, reinstall,
then works until next err
For me it detected automatically and installed seemingly correctly,
however printing did not work. Using the steps in the first post I got
it to work. This was from a fresh ubuntu install so it's definitely a
bug.

I have the same issue, HP 1020 is listed so you can add it. Once added the
'download aditional software' dialog appears, and does nothing after clicking
OK.
So there is definitely a bug here.
I applied the hp-setup command, where apparently the firmware is
downloaded, however in order to work I
I used "sudo hp-setup" to install this printer again and it worked fine.
I guess the status should be "Not confirmed".
However I already had it unstalled in Ubuntu 8.10 (Interpid) and it
stopped working after upgrade to 9.04 (Jaunty), probably becuase of lack
of downloaded firmware (or it was down
Correction, while the above procedure will install the printer, it
doesn't print correctly. Text is not positioned correctly on the pages!
I'll post this as a separate bug...
