Confirm. I think its problem with GTK1.
All applications written by GTK1 don't show russian fonts. Only hyeroglyphs.

I'm confirm that bag - xmms cyrillic fonts don't looks right way out of
the box (screenshot attached). It was in all versions of Ubuntu, wich I
use - 5.04, 5.10, 6.06.
Even if I install additional xfonts packages, for example: xfonts-cronyx-misc
xfonts-cronyx-75dpi
xfonts-cronyx-100dpi
