I'm having this same problem in 9.04 (AMD64) after a fresh install. I
had the same problems before a fresh install (after a failed dist-
upgrade) but I thought a fresh install would fix it.
If I enable the Nvidia 180 driver from the Hardware Drivers menu, a get

In Jaunty (9.04) we have dropped the nvidia-graphics-driver-177 package, as
it is superseded by nvidia-graphics-drivers-180.
Your reported issue may still be a problem in Intrepid (8.10) however
fixing it would require an update to the binary driver, which is not

I have the same symptoms here, after I did a reboot this morning
everything goes blank as soon as X starts. It seems like some upgrade
has broke something, I don't upgrade often so it might have been a not
so recent upgrade. Not sure it is the nvidia driver itself though, as
the same thing happens
