I have the same symptoms here, after I did a reboot this morning
everything goes blank as soon as X starts. It seems like some upgrade
has broke something, I don't upgrade often so it might have been a not
so recent upgrade. Not sure it is the nvidia driver itself though, as
the same thing happens both with both versions 96 and 177 that I have
tried.

I can't reach any of the terminals either (Ctrl+Alt+(F1-F6)) they are
also blank, it seems the video card is just messed up. I can't shutdown
X either, using /etc/init.d/gdm restart, it gives no error but stopping
gdm takes several seconds and when starting nothing changes (I do this
by first logging in using ssh).

If I do a

$ sudo reboot

... then the system won't startup correctly until I do an fsck. I don't
know if this is related but I can do that just fine if I don't start X
with the nvidia driver.

My solution for now is to use the nv driver, which works fine. I've even
tried moving the disk to another computer (another, much newer Dell
laptop, probably also nvidia) and get the same results - a blank screen.
