Update: I've now fixed this problem on my laptop by re-setting the PCM
volume to max - see this existing bug for details:

Sound on my laptop has worked fine with Ubuntu for several months now,
but today I rebooted and now it only crackles. My conf file also points
to alsa, but I'm loathe to change settings and mask a
I've got also some trouble with PulseAudio, but because of cdemu. On
last upgrade of cdemu-daemon, I couldn't get any sound from my sound
card, and applications such as Rhythmbox or VLC could crash randonly
(but without sound anyway).
Actually, it was not related to PulseAudio, but to the configur
I tried sound by booting windows: that is still working which at least
excludes a hardware failure.
