I get this problem with Mythtv. It has occurred on more than one install. I
have a remote frontend/backend and, on my desktop, I use a frontend. However

I have my solution... the problem is that your backend cannot find the
mysql server, my case was because I had an extra mysql.txt file which
was incorrect, What I did to fix it was find that incorrect file [ sudo
find / -name mysql.txt -print ] and check each file to make sure its
correct then you
Guyverix,
I never tried creating an empty text file in /var/log/mythtv/ and naming
it mythbackend.log
something like:
sudo echo > /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log
It might not fix the problem, but I didn't have the backend log file,
and I wondered if that was the cause. Maybe the file isn't bei

alpha 6.1 i386. System was installed as a frontend only. I found that
the backend process was running as well, and continuously accessing the
disk. I killed the process and it stopped.
I have not fixed this problem as of yet, s

Nick, these log files do exist, but they are both empty.
I just used a ubuntu package, I didn't build mythtv myself. I don't
remember seeing an error logging option, although I didn't look for one.
After installing mythtv, I never really used it. After spending ages
trying to get my obscure tv tu

I'm a little concerned that you don't seem to have a mythbackend.log

Did you enable Error logging to the MythTV Database? Could you post the

No, the issue was with the backend. The frontend was not running.
The disc activity sounded like a constant churning, initially I thought
it was a surface scan. It sounded like the process was either reading,
or writing constant data (there were no fluctuations like you would
expect when a process

Could someone with this issue also post the output of

I also had the same problem, with mythTV. I had constant hard disc
activity for nearly 3 days, before I checked to see what was causing it.
iotop showed mythtv-backend was the culprit, and I killed that process.
The disc activity stopped.

I have experienced this exact same problem. After checking in top for
mythbackend I killed the process and the constant harddrive access ended
immediately. I would assume therefore that the backend was causing the
issue.

Commit Log for Tue Dec 23 17:38:08 2008
Removed the following packages:
libmyth-0.21-0

mythtv-backend
mythtv-common

mythtv-transcode-utils
I had not installed any themes or done any sort of tweaking on it yet.

If you could go into your Synaptic history and post which packages you
removed to fix it, it would narrow down where the bug needs fixed.
Without that, I can't see whether the problem exists in the backend or
if it's a theme.
