Removed the following packages: libmyth-0.21-0 libmyth-perl mythtv-backend mythtv-common mythtv-database mythtv-frontend mythtv-transcode-utils I had not installed any themes or done any sort of tweaking on it yet. Had not even gone through the setup because I did not have the coax ran yet. I figured that since somebody cares enough to work on this I will just go ahead and try it again. I installed mythtv-frontend and mythtv-backend from "add/remove" and it started instantly. I shall include a screenshot of iotop as it exposes the guilty party. This time it stopped when I uninstalled from "add/remove" so Synaptic was not necessary. 8.04, AMD64X2, onboard video, haupage pvr-250 Hope that helps.
