In order to work around this, I created a new user with new gnome
settings and the problem went away. I did however keep all my old
settings to try to reproduce the bug, but am no longer able to. I am
setting the bug to Invalid until I can reproduce it again.

It wasnt' obvious whether the failsafe session worked or not.
gnome-session has a "--debug" switch, which I assume will make it log
more messages to your ~/.xsession-errors. I was going to ask you if you

Jamie - this doesn't seem like a Xorg issue, as the server is loading
ok. It definately looks more like some sort of session issue. Can you
try with the failsafe session? Can you attach your ~/.xsession-errors
from that attempt as well?

visible. The upper panel (not shown) is sometimes partially visible and
