The built-in mic is now working well on my Dell Vostro 1710 using
Karmic. The module is loaded with the following option :
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m23

i have a dell vostro 1710 and have similar problems under both intrepid and
jaunty.
my built in mic will not record anything but noise despite trying all the
combinations
of model flags (dell,3stack,laptop-eapd) and module load and mixer options.
The main problem here is that people are assuming

Hi Jeremy,
I recall that it was important that I have the "Digital Input Source"
set to "Digital Mic 1". I didn't see this in your mixer settings under
the "Options" tab. In order to display it, click "Preferences" and tick
the "Digital Input Source" option.

Also, in the "Options" tab, my Input Source options are: Mic, Front Mic,
Line, CD. Selecting Front Mic (or any other) makes no difference.

Thanks Leann. My mixer settings are attached in the screen shot. I
will attach ALSA settings below. The sound recorder in my screenshot
results in a blank file - the mic level reading is just from having the
recording levels cranked so high in the mixer during this test.

Hi Jeremy,
I think this may just be an issue with your mixer settings. I myself
have a Dell Inspiron 1420 and although my soundcard is one revision
older than yours (and I'm also unsure of which codec you use), my built
in mic is working here.
