i have a dell vostro 1710 and have similar problems under both intrepid and jaunty. my built in mic will not record anything but noise despite trying all the combinations of model flags (dell,3stack,laptop-eapd) and module load and mixer options.
The main problem here is that people are assuming that all dell vostro's use the same chipset and they dont , it changes with the model numbers (see gentoo wiki) This is also getting tangled up in other confusions because the snd-hda-intel driver is used by many different soundcards all with different codecs and different i/o layouts so this will almost certainly not be relevant to other models. mine uses a Realtek ALC268 , as verified by the output of cat /proc/asound/Intel/codec#0 (see attachment for output) I'm a pretty experienced linux user and am happy to help provide more info and or test if needed , i would love to have this working for me and for others.
