Hi Jeremy,

I think this may just be an issue with your mixer settings.  I myself
have a Dell Inspiron 1420 and although my soundcard is one revision
older than yours (and I'm also unsure of which codec you use), my built
in mic is working here.

I've attached a screenshot of the settings I'm using here.  I'll also
attach the output of my alsa-info.txt file which can be generated by
downloading and running http://alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh with the
--no-upload option:

./alsa-info.sh --no-upload

Additionally, I've attached a sample recording to prove I'm able to
record with the built-in mic.  If you are still having trouble with the
built in mic, it would be good for you at attach your alsa-info.txt
file.  Thanks.
