Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to
this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find
out what additional work should be done on this bug.

when you run (in a terminal):

what does that display?
I suspect it might be another problem with sudo/gksu. We fixed one issue
with that a week ago, but there may be another problem hidding somewhere
or the fix may not work for you.

I just 'kill'ed the process (showed as before with ps -ef, i.e. 'Please
wait, this can take some time') . That returned focus to the Update
Manager window, it redisplayed the update screen, I clicked 'Update'
again... and I was asked for the root password and it all updated
correctly - no hanging.
A single update this morning (libpq5) hung. I know straight away whether
it's going to work or not because if it's going to work I get asked for
the root password. If I don't get asked, it hangs.
Personally, my feeling is perhaps the problem is not in the update
manager itself (hence most people b
I've downloaded four sets of updates in the last four days (29, 13, 39
and 1 on June 16, 17, 18, 19, respectively) with no problems, so it
looks like whatever was wrong has been fixed somewhere before June 16.

Update; I removed 'openoffice.org-l10n-en-za' from the update list and
update manager ran to completion successfully. I find it difficult to
believe that it was the source of the problem but it might be a clue to
what is. I'll see what happens after I select it for update.

It hung again this morning on an update. Interestingly, it also hung
when I viewing the details of the packages to be updated. On both
occasions the results of "sudo id" was

I ran pstree -A after it hung when I was viewing the u
Thanks for this additional information.
If the libgksu2-0 update did not resolve this issue for you, please run
"pstree -A" when it hangs in a termianl and attach the output. Please

I was having the same problem (i.e. hanging Update Manager). I updated
with synaptic and then, after having read this thread, did...
apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
All ran cleanly without error. Interestingly, apt-get upgrade found the

In response to a query by Michael Vogt, following suggestions on the

apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get autoremove
This seemed to solve the problem, but it also clouds the question as to
whether I was running the l

Thanks for your bugreport.
Can you please check if you have the latest libgksu2-0 installed? To do that,
please open a terminal window (e.g. gnome-termianl from
APplications/Accessories) and run:
$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install libgksu2-0
and let me know if it works after that.
