I've noticed that too quite a wile ago. Gnome terminal (and terminator)
don't handle properly composing Unicode characters.
The first character in the attached file "french ipa signs" is composed
of:
<ɛ> Hex 025b + < ̃> Hex 0303 (utf-8 sequence: c9 9b + cc 83)

I tried aterm, but no diacritics is working in it (czech one is also not
working); but in xterm are the ipa signs displayed correctly.
I don't understand what package do you mean. I have Ubuntu Hardy (sorry, I
foregot mention it) with “gnome-terminal” and “gnome-terminal-data” packages
installed
What's the package you're using, and does this font error occur on aterm
as well?
