I think we can close this bug as it appears to be due to a hardware
fault in the monitor that is preventing the EDID information arriving at
the VGA port.
Only this monitor has this problem on this computer. I have tested
Jaunty Alpha-4 and the problem persists if the M993c is the only monitor

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

A further update. I have connected a different monitor to my system (an
older Dell 19" CRT D1226H) and it works fine. The xserver-xorg-video-nv
detects it correctly and allows me to choose resolutions up to
1600x1200.

I ran the DOS get-edid program from
http://john.fremlin.de/programs/linux/read-edid/ on my system and it
reports "The EDID data should not be trusted as the VBE call failed". I
have attached the 128 byte EDID output file - parse-edid reports a
checksum error when asked to decode it.

Another data point. I booted Ubuntu 7.10, removed the proprietary nvidia driver
and rebooted using the nv driver.
The Xorg.0.log shows that the monitor cannot be identified (so this is not a
regression from 7.10 to 8.04).
The screen resolution applet however allows me to select resolutions up to

No need to install to HDD, livecd is fine.
This might sound silly, but could you try Fedora9 beta livecd available here:
http://fedoraproject.org/get-prerelease
It uses the latest X snapshot from upstream, and if you do get a correct
resolution with it, then it should be possible to cherry pick
I downloaded and booted from the image http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-
live/current/hardy-desktop-i386.iso and the LiveCD session shows no
changes - still 800x600, still no working DDC:

Please upgrade to the latest nv driver uploaded yesterday, or try a
daily livecd from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/.
