Rastersoft released a .deb-file here
https://www.rastersoft.com/programas/ding.html which I could easily
install without uninstalling anything first. After a reboot everything
is working again.
So anyone who doesn't want to wait until the fix comes via the normal
update process can install the .de
Fix committed to debian/latest, so it's coming soon(?). Needs a Debian
uploader before syncing to Ubuntu 25.04.

The whole thing looks a bit confusing at first glance, but this is how it works
(self tested).
First you have to remove everything from this extension completely and then
recompile the extension with meson and finally “install over” the standard

Few days ago I followed Marc Pueschel's instruction. Everything was fine: I got
working thumbnails!
After Marc procedure apt asked me to auto-remove gir1.2-gnomedesktop-3.0 and
gir1.2-gnomeautoar-0.1 packages, but I forgot to do it.
I did it this morning and suddenly I lost desktop icons.

In case it doesn't work, just run `sudo ninja -C .build uninstall` in a
terminal at the same folder from where you installed the downloaded version,
and then reinstall gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng .
Although the thumbnails won't work, at least you will have icons again.

Yes, you probably need to reactivate the extension. Try installing
gnome-shell-extension-prefs . It should allow you to enable it.

I wish to add myself as a another user with the exact same phenomena.
Move files from desktop to another folder and thumbnails appear. Some
.jpeg, .pdf files do display thumbnails on Desktop while some do not
with nothing apparent that is different between the files.
