I believe this bug is a duplicate of #155100. The solution pointed out
there by Tatty worked perfectly for me - now I can switch between GUI
and tty without any problems.

I am running Ubuntu Hardy LTS on a HP Pavilion dv6000 and have the same
problem. Also no vga command.
Also nvidia working and I can enter blindly on the console (so console is
working), but I have not managed to see it while gdm is running.
