Confirmed. I am running Ubuntu Hardy LTS on a HP Pavilion dv6000 and have the same problem. Also no vga command. Also nvidia working and I can enter blindly on the console (so console is working), but I have not managed to see it while gdm is running.
I saw a lot of different similar bugs for Feisty, including configuration of usplash, blacklisting, etc. but none worked for me. In case it is of any importance: Laptop is running on 1280x800 resolution, so wide screen format.
