I had the same garbling problems with ATI Technologies Inc RC410 [Radeon
Xpress 200].
First I've tried the Open source driver... It work but not fine because
it was extremely brightness.
I've activated restricted drivers and then I have the same problem

some more information about my problem :
- I have not this problem with fglrx driver, but I can't hibernate with this
driver,
- I have removed /etc/X11/xorg.conf and give Xorg.0.log as attachment.
- some time, it's like like a rainbow on the video.

I have also problems with ATI Xpress 200 viewing video. Video is not
displayed or contains vertical lines. Some time, if I run 2 times vlc it
works for the second instance.
I can't make a screenshot because it's a video buffer and I can't
capture it.

Changing accel to EXA doesn't help - in fact, when changing, X randomly on
startup (1) acts identically to the previous setup, (2) hangs midway through
bringing up the desktop after logging in.
Two more points if they help:
(1) When logging in from the greeting screen, the screen flashes black, a
"mid-air collision"
