Changing accel to EXA doesn't help - in fact, when changing, X randomly on startup (1) acts identically to the previous setup, (2) hangs midway through bringing up the desktop after logging in. Two more points if they help: (1) When logging in from the greeting screen, the screen flashes black, and the cursor becomes the X cursor for a second before going back to an arrow cursor; (2) The main problem is that everything is very slow - screen repaints take forever, whiptail takes ~10 minutes to draw an opening splash screen on a maximized console window in X.
