Your problem is almost certainly different to this. Given that the hangs are
"random" I would strongly recommend checking launchpad for a more appropriate
bug and reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia in
case that contains any links to useful bugs. If nothing is
Got random hangups using nvidia-glx 100.14.11+2.6.22.3-11.3 with

It is happening with and without compiz running, hangups was started just after
jumping from 0.9x to 100.x version of video driver and corresponding kernel

New version of the driver came down this afternoon. I had to remove
legacy kernal module again and reinstall headers, restricted manager,
etc to even get it to run. Instead of white screen I got a black screen
with mouse pointer. But in safe Gnome mode, I did get a pop up telling
me to disable XGL
Seems to be related, but I don't have an ATI card. I think it might
simply be an issue between compiz and the latest XGL, then. Because when
I take that script away (and thus it does not start) compiz starts
working again. The extension SGI extension is missing from the xdpyinfo
output as well:

The direct rendering thing being off with XGL is not unexpected... When
you are using XGL your GL is still accelerated but its no longer
direct...
This is probably Bug #136598 ...

Did a little playing around with the Xubuntu desktop and this popped up
again. I did move the glx files over to /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions
from the /usr/X11R6/lib/ tree but that did not fix the issue. Based on
some thread in the community forums I removed the file /etc/.Xsession.d

Ok,
This is now working for me, but all I did was try the 9755 driver again.
I got it to load, but the display was not working properly. I had to
copy some files over from the /usr/X11R6/lib folder to the
/usr/lib/xorg/modules folder to even get it to try and load without

I tried to install the patched version from Nvidia of this driver, and
it did load but it fixed nothing of the problems with compiz, nvidia-
settings, etc.

Did some googling and found out that Direct Rendering needs to be turned
on and it is not getting turned on. This could be because the server and
client do not match? There's a posting on the debian sites about it, but
the fix seems to be there for Ubuntu...
