just realized: the calender pane is still shown in my tb, but without
any content. so tb realizes that lightning is installed, but messing
something else up here. but nonetheless, my longtime experience with
ubuntu tells me it must at least be closely related to the above
mentioned bug.

obviously this bug is still not fixed - my machine upgraded to
thunderbird 24 and lightning 2.6.1 yesterday and now lightning is not
working anymore. i am working with ubuntu 12.04 64bit, with the 64bit
part and lightning having caused problems before. hope there will be an
update fixing that prob
In my system
/usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions
is indeed a real directory and not a symlink; it is also empty. I
suppose that some addon packages may have left it during the update. The
only addons I ever installed are
xul-ext-calendar-timezones
xul-ext-gdata-provider
xul-ext-light
I just tested on another box that has the same addons installed but is
still at version 17. The `extensions/` directory is a symlink to
`../thunderbird-addons/extensions/`.

This means that the /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions -> /usr/lib
/thunderbird-addons/extensions symlink is broken on your install because
there are unsupported packages installing files in to
/usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions. It's likely this has always been broken
on your install. The difference her
I can confirm this bug.
It helped, adding the following line to section [ExtensionDirs]
to extensions.ini in my profile directory:
/usr/lib/thunderbird-addons/extensions/
After that, the new lightning extension got recognized and the
extensions.ini.
I guess, xul-ext-lightning should use /usr/l
