In my system

    /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions

is indeed a real directory and not a symlink; it is also empty. I
suppose that some addon packages may have left it during the update. The
only addons I ever installed are

    xul-ext-calendar-timezones
    xul-ext-gdata-provider
    xul-ext-lightning

And, for the sake of completeness...

    $ dpkg -S /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/
    thunderbird: /usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions
