Seems to be fixed, i tried the different settings i used in the screenshots and
it rendered correctly all the time.
This bug could be closed.

Can you confirm whether this bug is still present for you in the 7.10
release? I have not been able to reproduce the problem here with gedit
using any of the Monospace, Sans, and Arial fonts, but I also don't see
any o
Try with no hinting. Any amount of hinting causes glyph distortion for
the sake of increased contrast/crispness.

Now I changed the way of smoothing which seems to have an effect on this
rendering problem. The ö is much narrower when using "none" or
"subpixel", while it is almost as wide as the normal o when using
"grayscale" (the difference is barely noticable).
