installation (online update during installation was NOT enabled).
The problem kicked in immediately after very first online update (in last state

Alright, I finally got this fixed -- don't know where the problem was
but decided to give it a harsh treatment and start all over.
1. Disabled all PPA's and other sources alike, and from
/etc/apt/sources.list , made sure that I had only the repositories under

This worked for me:
Delete ippusbxd
sudo apt purge ippusbxd
Install driver hplib
Install libusb-0.1-4 , if not already installed
sudo apt install libusb-0.1-4
Make sure that the scan resolution doesn't exceed 300 dpi.

Once I have tried to install pepperflashplugin-nonfree, it blocks all
