I have resolved the issue. In /etc/default/grub, GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE was set to "hidden". I changed it to "menu" and ran update-grub It is a serious bug to hide away the grub menu on a dual boot system. This makes the other operating system inaccessible. In addition, even on non-dual boot system t

I have been unable to reproduce the problem. I am not in the mood to reinstall windows, and delete a partition, and then try to install again. Just deleting the partition that I put mandriva on, doesn't produce the bug. What is interesting, is when I install, during boot, I have a purple background

Well, I have installed mandriva, and I would have to remove the installation to reproduce the problem. That is doable, however, when starting the installation, I am dumped into a non root shell. I don't even know what the root password is, at that stage. I have no idea if I can mount a usb device,
