I have resolved the issue.
In /etc/default/grub, GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE was set to "hidden". I changed it to
"menu" and ran
update-grub
It is a serious bug to hide away the grub menu on a dual boot system.
This makes the other operating system inaccessible.

I am using the onboard vga graphics attached to a monitor that directly
supports vga.
I am typically running the vga at 1920x1080 resolution.

I have a supermicro X10SLM+-LN4F motherboard.
It is running with legacy bios mode, not UEFI.
I have a sata ssd boot disk which is formatted with fdisk mode, not gpt.
I have windows 11 installed on the disk as well as kubuntu 24.10.

I have been unable to reproduce the problem.
I am not in the mood to reinstall windows, and delete a partition, and
then try to install again.
Just deleting the partition that I put mandriva on, doesn't produce the bug.
What is interesting, is when I install, during boot, I have a purple

installation to reproduce the problem. That is doable, however, when
starting the installation, I am dumped into a non root shell.
I don't even know what the root password is, at that stage.

I reboot the system, removing the cd.
I select ubuntu.
There is a menu allowing several options for finishing the install.
