Fixed here by doing a 'sudo /etc/init.d/dhcdbd start' before logging
into X. Now I have no clue why dhcdbd doesn't start in the first place.

Sigh, why don't you just read my explanation instead of insisting?
PCM oubviously controls *both* because that's the input they get.
LFE controls the LFE channel.
Master controls the 2 other speakers, it *should* also control the LFE channel
but this is not the case and that's an alsa issue. Ther
Nah, the control is correct but the LFE channel is not linked to
'master'. What you have to do is go to the gnome settings and enable the
volume control to change both tracks (LFE and Master).

Ok, so basically I have to change some chipset in my laptop but.. well.
Is there something else that can be done on a software level? I'm pretty
sure it "works with Windows" (tm), which I suppose is done by sending
samples at 44100 instead of 48000.
If I fiddle around:

All of those "requirements" are useless, as I told, the LFE (subwoofer)
of the Dell 9400 is not recognized by the kernel unless that patch is
applied against 2.6.20-5.
Are you actually human or just some script grepping for some output?
Anyway, I'll try to get it fixed upstream then. Too bad the
