Ok, so I removed that filter (using vim) from the filters file, and now
I can run synaptic again - yay!
It was over a year ago when the filter was added, so my memory is very
hazy, but I think it's quite possible that I created that filter. I
probably got the list of names from the dependencies ou
I had a look at the last log file in /root/.synaptic/log/ whose
modification time matches the filters file, and it said this:

I tried again with 12.04.1 and the symptoms persist. The segfault in
syslog from `sudo synaptic` is:

The bug occurs at random moments when using LibreOffice calc - hard to
identify when, seems to be associated with mouse clicks but I havn't
found a systematic way to make it happen.
But.. I can cause unity to hide by selecting then in eclipse! It's the
mouse release event after a drag that hides U
I have identified a way to cause unity to stick open:
1. Open Kile in full secreen mode with the "Open File" pane open on the left
edge of the screen.
2. Drag a file from the list (doesn't matter where - it's starting to drag that
matters)
3. Unity opens and remains open, even when changing desk
Also here. I have seen it without an LibreOffice apps open, however the
last time it happened, I was editing in LibreOffice Impress. Closing
LibreOffice Impress resolved the problem in this case.
Previously, I had tried "> unity --replace" but when Unity re-appeared,
it didn't auto-hide. That time
The new ~/.gconf has not fixed the problem.
