start. This means that knotes, kalarm, etc do not work. Manually trying

Skype works on 13.10 if launched with this command:
env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 /usr/bin/skype
Does NOT work if the PULSE_LATENCY is not used, so the package is still

Edit /etc/pulse/default.pa
find the line that says:
load-module module-udev-detect
and to the end of it add "tsched=0" so the line now looks like:

The problem seems to have occurred during the 13-04 -> 13.10 upgrade.
Not sure whether the problem is pulseaudio or alsa related.

There is no audio on skype or flashplayer, either through firefox or chromium.
When running skype, there is no entry for it in pavucontrol.
When running chromium, there is an entry for "ALSA plug-in (chromium browser)"

That is truly bizarre.
On my system, fso-deviced is not installed.
What I found that finally worked is changing xorg.conf, adding the line
Option "dpms" "false"
in the "Server Flags" section, and removing the
Option "DPMS"
line from the "Monitor" section.

Discovered the problem:
Copying the file /usr/lib/sane/libsane-hpaio.so.1 from the precise 12.04
installation to the quantal 12.10 installation fixes the problem. This
file is part of the libsane-hpaio package. If I can figure out how to
change the bug report, I will do so.

FYI, I am no longer using 11.10, now on 12.04. It does not have the
problem. I did make the changes in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, and
12.04 does not seem to be restoring dpms to "enabled". I have no idea
whether the problem persists in 11.10, as I am no longer using it.

This is Kubuntu-11.10, all current updates applied, 64-bit.
the problem is the screen keeps blanking -- going to black every few
seconds, regularly, and moving the mouse does restore the normal screen.
I do not have any screensavers activated, and everything on Power save

I notice one strange thing: If I LEFT click on the icon, it works
normally. If I RIGHT click on the icon, a menu comes up that looks
similar, but it does not have the quit, settings, and "HPLIP Service
Status" icons that are visible in the left-click version.

1. The fonts have become so light, that the screen is unreadable. The

build a new initrd.img.

The problem appears to be solved in kubuntu/maverick. Nouveau is working
properly in that distribution. I have not tried with any others.

I managed to get the problem solved. I removed the proprietary driver, using
"sudo nvidia-installer --uninstall".
Next, apt-get install nvidia-cu
This workaround works on my system.
8gb Ram, so mem=8589934592
Can now boot live cd/usb for kubuntu 10.04.
So what does this mean? The kernel is not correctly detecting the amount
of memory? If so, it sounds more like a kernel bug than casper.

Well, not quite.
I am running kubuntu 10.04, with kde desktop. When I boot with the
nvidia-current driver (which is 195.36.15-0ubuntu3) I get to the kdm
login screen. I log in, the kde ksplasher screen starts, then

Installing the nvidia-current package, install goes OK, but trying to start kde
results in the "login loop" -- the greeter comes up, login, the splash screen
