to 20.04 without issues.

I can confirm that the bug stays the same with the kernel released today.
uname -r: 4.15.0-041500rc2-generic
I plugged in a second monitor into the intel HD Graphics 630 and the GUI
crashed as described before.
I mayby might had the same problem with 16.04 and Xen 4.9
History of the machine:

I now can limit the error to Intel HD Graphics 630 (used in i7 7700)
ubuntu 17.10 (maybe also 16.04, had sometimes same trouble with it &
unity) AND Xen 4.9. the package I compiled my selfe for 16.04.
I used an ATI Radeon HD 8670 and the bug vanished.

I did some more reboots and got me a screenshot from 4.8rc1 crash.
I switch to the first console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) as soon as the graphical login
screen appears.
I'll try to catch one for kernel 4.8.0-22. So far there is no output. The
cursor at the login prompt simply disappears and the VM hangs.
Installing apparmor 2.10.95-4ubuntu5.1 did not change then problem for me.
Kernel 4.8rc1 hangs too.
Kernel 4.7 worked once for a few minutes and crashed the second time.

I can confirm the same problems on Ubuntu Server 15.10 which comes with
davfs2 1.5.2.
A reboot is the only way to resolve that error. And sometimes even the reboot
is not correctly finished
and a reset of the machine is needed.

May I also chime in? If I wanted my machine to run at Celeron speed, I
would not have bought a core i5. I think it makes no sense to select
the "powersave" governors by default without telling the user in any

I tried several things with either open-vm-tools or vmware-tools and the
conflicting software removed.
Ubuntu was upgraded from 15.04 (initially 12.04), open-vm-tools and
vmware-tools were both always working fine.

It's because of compiz_core package is corrupted! after remove the package and
download it again the problem fixed!
