Well, the fix is only temporary, after about five minutes of installing
packages, it breaks again. Perhaps update manager is doing something
funny. I also have to delete the lock files since they get left behind
when the process dies.

I don't think this is a duplicate. I read the other ticket and the
upstream report on the same. It talks about the gfs not being able to
map remote user and group ids to the local machine. On my nautilus it
I still have the old version and I can confirm that it's not a
regression, the other bug was there before the upgrade.
After installing the proposed update and restarting gedit, the first bug
(178746) is fixed, but the other (247877) is still not fixed.

I get the same problem on my machine. I have an Intel T2060 1.6GHz Dual
Core. My pidgin won't boot at all. I have a MSN account, a GTalk
account and an AIM account. If I wipe my profile it comes up. I can
add my Google Talk and AIM accounts back in and it still works fine.

The brightness problem is just gnome trying to be smart. Before the patch
it had no control over the brightness, but not that it has control, well
mostly, it does crazy stuff. I actually had the same problem in reverse.

Yes, I am using a fixed DSDT, I'm using the one given in the link I
posted. You'll need to copy the aml file to
/etc/initramfs-tools/DSDT.aml
and then either install the kernel or reconfigure it, one way is to
boot into the new kernel and run
sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-`uname -r`

I have noticed one annoying thing with the new kernel. Now that
Ubuntu is handling the display settings it overrides me and doesn't
let me turn the brightness up all the way when I'm unplugged. This is
likely a problem with the brightness program, but before the kernel
didn't have access to it so

Toshiba p105-s6147, it's a 17" with Intel video and Atheros wireless.

As a temporary workaround, I installed the 2.6.20-16 kernel from Fiesty.
It seems to work fine in my Gutsy system. (I installed it by adding all
the feisty repositories to my apt list) I'm not sure what recent fixes

Oh, one more thing, I just upgraded to 2.6.22-12 and it's still not
working, I tried all the different combinations of the mixer and even
recompiled alsa from source, still no errors and no sound.

I hope that this additional information helps. When I first started
using Linux many years ago Sound was one of the easiest things to get
working and video was the hardest, now it's opposite, my Intel video
card works flawlesly out of the box, but I can't get my sound to work
for anything. I hope

I have exactly the same problem, even down to the 9 error messages at
