notifications at the bottom of the window. All I get is:

I commented these out, and now everything is ok.
I can only assume webmin created these iptable rules.

I renamed /etc/iptables.up.rules to /etc/iptables.up.rules.bak and
rebooted. This fixes the ufw problem (ufw now starts automatically), but
unfortunately causes another problem -:( When I reboot, dnsmasq fails to
start and I end up with no addresses on either of my Ethernet
interfaces.

Ah, now you mention it, I was using webmin; which I had used to set up
NAPT. Sometime later I set up IPv6 and realised that webmin couldn't be
used for IPv6 firewall configuration, so I started using UFW instead. I
uninstalled webmin but did not remove the firewall rules beforehand.
