Out of curiosity, I decided to look at what was actually sent by the device
using libusb.
I managed to reverse ingeneer the structure of the USB packet, and have
attached it as a C header (my machine is little endian, if it matters), along
with the C++ code I used.
I don't know how this compare
I actually have had the chance to test the controller on 2 other
different computers since I first submitted this bug report, but the
problem has always been the same. So it cannot be a BIOS issue I
suppose.

When attempting to open sawfish-ui (the program that executes when using
the config menu) on the Appearance settings or all settings (which
includes Appearance settings), sawfish-ui terminates immediately.

i found the root of the problem:
after removing the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, i was able to view
the properties window in nautilus as it should be.
the totem player now complains about a missing codec and suggests to
install gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad but there's no memory leakage anymore
this bug doesnt seem to be fixed on my recent karmic ubuntu system.

appropriate Ubuntu fix, a more cross distro solution is necessary.
